 New improvements transformed the “Bluejay Lounge” into “Java Jays—Home of the Overflowing Cup” at Tabor College.

“It looks so modern and stylish,” said Katie Chlumsky, a Tabor freshman. “It’s a comfortable atmosphere to be in.”

USD 410 board acts to strengthen Parents as Teachers

The Unified School District 410 Board of Education made decisions atits Monday, Jan. 14, meeting to help support the Parents As Teachersprogram of Marion County.

The board agreed 6-0 to authorize the program to request additional funding from the Kansas Department of Edu­ca­tion, and to provide matching funds for the current school year if the KDE request is granted.

“What better time to impact kids, than right there?” said Evan Yoder, Hillsboro Elemen­tary School principal. “That’s what we’re in the business of—the education of kids.”

The board also approved unanimously the motion to authorize PAT to hire an educator for 30 hours per week.

Newhard to direct student success at Tabor

When Don Krebs decided to retire at the end of this past calendar year, Tabor College officials didn’t have to look far to find his replacement.

After working closely with Krebs in the fall, Karen Newhard has become the new director of student success.

“Karen has a great background in student development at more than one college,” said Eric Codding, dean of student development. “Don highly recommended Karen after having her on staff last semester.”

Newhard came to Hillsboro with her husband, Chad, the new baseball coach at Tabor. She had been the director of student life, leadership and development at Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana. She also worked as a family consultant for Lifeline Youth and Family Services in Fort...

Schmitt to play two concerts

Sheila Schmitt, associate professor of piano and pedagogy at Tabor College, will present “A Program of Piano Music by Felix Mendelssohn-Barthold” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Golden Plains Free Methodist, 224 NW 60th St., in Newton.

She will also play at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Tabor College Chapel.

Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

 

Riesen is Hesston College ambassador

Travis Riesen of Hillsboro, a freshman at Hesston College, has been selected as a student ambassador for the 2007-08 school year.

As one of 23 student ambassadors, Riesen will host prospective students during their visits to campus.

“Ambassadors are crucial in providing a positive visit experience for prospective students, and in promoting Hesston College in other settings as needed,” said Joel Kauffman, interim vice president of admissions.
