HES 'Family Reading Night' draws 2/3 of students, families

Couple to describe teaching in China

Longtime educators Menno and Alice Isaac of North Newton had a life-changing experience teaching English to Chinese school teachers in Bao Tou, a city of 3 million people in Inner Mongolia.

The couple will present, “Summer teaching program in a ‘small’ city in China” during the next Tabor College “60-plus” Learning in Retirement Program at 10 a.m. Monday, March 24, at the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center in Hillsboro.

Menno Isaac is a 1958 graduate of Tabor College and has a master’s degree from Emporia State University. He is retired from a teaching career in Kingsburg, Calif.

Alice Penner Isaac was raised in the central valley of California. While a student at Tabor, she met Menno Isaac, from Meade. She went on to...

Marion High School and Marion Middle School have released their respective honor rolls for the third quarter of the 2007-08 school year.

To be named to the high honor roll, a student needs a grade-point average between 4.0 and 3.75. An asterisk (*) denotes a 4.0 GPA.

To be named to the regular honor roll, a GPA of 3.74 and 3.5 is required.

To be named to the honorable mention honor roll, students need a GPA between 3.49 and 3.0.

HHS chess team ties for state title; Bartel places 20th

HHSchessState.jpg HHSchessState.jpg The Hillsboro High School chess team came home with a second-place trophy from the Class 3A Kansas Scholastic Chess Association’s high school championships this weekend at Blue Valley High School in Kansas City. HHS actually tied with Chapparal High School for the team title, but was awarded the second-place trophy via the tie-breaker system. John Bartel won a state medal—the first individual medal ever won by a Hillsboro team member—by placing 20th among the 184 high school players.
