Educators attend state conference

Ten area members of Alpha Omega Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma International, honor society of outstanding women educators, attended the Phi State Conference April 11-13 at in Hutchinson.Attending from the area were Pauline Holub, Janine Bateman, Helen Reznicek and Mary Olson from Marion; Mary Regier, Jan Terman, LeOra Grunau and Anita Boese from Hillsboro; Sonja Koslowsky from Peabody, and Neysa Eberhard from Newton.

Tabor 60+ to end spring semester with party and Hickenpoopers

The last Tabor College 60+ Learning in Retirement program of the spring semester, “Year-end Party with the Hickenpoopers,” will contain so much light-hearted music and fun that the show will begin at an earlier time: 9:40 a.m. Monday, May 5, in the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center.Comedians “Bruno and Manirva Hickenpooper,” (not their real names) will present a series of tongue-in-cheek skits titled, “Wit and Wisdom for Aging with Humor and Grace.”
“Although at their age planning ahead for anything can be kaput, Manirva and Bruno hope to be up and around for the party,” said Connie Isaac, program coordinator.

HHS instrumentalists, vocalists fare well at Class 3A state contests

Hillsboro High School instrumental and vocal groups received high marks at state music contests this month.The Trojan Band came within five points—two points from one judge and three from another—from getting all “I” ratings from the three judges at the state large-group contest April 16 at Lindsborg.
“This is the closest our band has gotten to a ‘I’ at state large group contest in 10 years,” director Gregg Walker said.
Receiving a ‘I’ rating at the state solo and ensemble contest April 26 at Southeast of Saline were: Katrina Muzyka, alto saxophone; J. Michael Hiebert, snare drum; Percussion Ensemble (Mitchell Koop, Elise Heyen, J. Michael Hiebert, Jarod Hamm).

USD 410 board approves 2008-09 calendar

Unified School District 410 Board of Education approved the calendar for 2008-09 school year at Monday’s regular meeting.The vote was 6-1, with board member Dale Klassen casting the dissenting vote.
Classes for students will begin Aug. 13 and end May 22. Spring break, designated for third week in March, corresponds with other districts in the county. The calendar is based on 192 contract days.
The board made its decision after considering five options.
“I’m tired of talking about (the calendar),” said board president Rod Koons prior to the vote.
Contract days and Memorial Day being earlier next year were among factors that affected the flexibility of calendar.
