The crews working on First and Adams streets are making great progress. It is quite methodical how they do it and fascinating to watch.

We were especially interested in how they were planning to leave access open to the post office for our weekly trips in and out of the loading area there. Since we deliver more than 100 mail bags weighing about 2,000 pounds into the post office and then pick most of them up again for our deliveries to all of the Marion County post offices, it would have been very inconvenient to drag them all in there another way.

They solved it by leaving half of the drive open and are pouring the road in two segments.

The Marion County Relay for Life will be much different this time around. As the posters around town indicate, it will be 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, held indoors at the Marion Sports and Aquatic Center and will end at midnight rather than the next morning as has been the tradition in the past.

I had some chocolate cake made with beets. All I could say is that it beats any cake I’ve ever had for moistness.

Google maps are all getting out of date, at least in Hillsboro, they are. I googled our address for the Free Press and it still has the old paint job, the old green awning and the old sign.

How in the world are they going to keep up with the world? I did hear that their trucks were in Wichita taking new images of the landscape most likely to update the existing views.

And I did hear that in some cases they have added new images but mistakenly left the old ones in place so you can see two views of the same address, kind of like a before and after.

Keeping everything current with just about anything might be the biggest challenge of our time. And the surest thing in the world is change so those who deal with change will always have something to do. It may not be profitable but that is the chance one takes. You can quote me on this.

Sen. Harry Reid and some other U.S. Congressmen who are up in arms about where the United States Olympic uniforms were made—China—are off their rockers.

I’ll bet the suit, shirt, tie, underwear and socks he was wearing when he made the announcement were probably made in some other country besides the good old U.S.A.—probably some of it in China.

Political posturing really gets on my nerves. There is so much of it these days I am about ready to throw up.

For the first time in a long time, I attended one of the KU Alumni events which happened to be held in Marion this past Friday morning.

We were told by an alumni association representative that we’d win a prize if we could produce our Alumni Association membership card.

I started looking through my billfold and found the business card of my KU Med Center cancer doctor (which I thankfully don’t need anymore) and thought maybe that might be close enough to get something. As I dug further I did find my alumni card.

It was good for a print of the statute that is located outside of Allen Field House that was taken in the fog and the snow.
