Partly Nonsense

For a while on Thursday last week I thought I had established residency in Chicago O’Hare airport. What I thought would be a routine trip ended up in a cancelled connecting flight plus one delay after another. I ended up reaching my destination 10 hours later than planned. The airline blamed it on the weather but I have a sneaking suspicion the flight wasn’t full and it served them better to herd us all onto a later flight that was full.
As it turned out, I could have driven it in less time, but then I would have to had drive home. The return trip came off without a hitch and I was home in five hours door to door. Unlike the 16 hours it took to get there.

What follows is not made up. It is a chat session with our local phone company trying to determine why phones (Internet) were not working around town most of the day Thursday, May 24. Ours were working as we have Internet phones through Eaglecom.Thank you for contacting CenturyLink. My name is William K. (20709): Hello! My name is Billy! How may I assist you today?
Joel: Any idea when service will be restored?
Billy: You’ll need to contact our reconnect services Department at 1-800-423-8994.
Joel: We have no Internet service and we can’t call anything outside of the local exchange.
Joel: Our bill is paid; this is a CenturyLink service issue.
Billy: I am sorry, I’m not able to assist the reconnect within my...

I’m glad to say that the facelift of the Free Press building is complete with new paint, new awning and replacement sign. We have heard that people can’t find us, but I think that will change now.Son Dan has been accustomed to taking about an hour to get anything he needed for the work he was doing in the Seattle area, plus dealing with traffic to boot. Not so here.
We were glad we could get everything locally that we needed to do the job. With The Lumberyard and True Value just down the street, it was a matter of walking over and getting what we needed. The green awning material took just two days to get here after ordering it. And Jostrux was right here in town for the sign. It’s so handy to have everything so close by when...

The HHS All-School Reunion is just around the corner, slated for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church. Advance reservations for the banquet are due by this Friday, May 18.We will be recognizing several of the classes whose year’s end in “2” during the evening.
The meal will be served by Panhandler’s Catering. I don’t know what we are having other than I think the dessert will be some kind of chocolate. The guys on the committee don’t get to pick the main course but we do have a say in the dessert.
Be sure to check out the senior pictures that will be displayed in some of the businesses around town. And this year, with the help of the Chamber of Commerce, we are asking businesses to...

I wish I could have gone to the KU Relays two weekends ago. Not because of anything in particular, but because I always enjoy seeing the great athletes that show up for the event each year.I remember being there in the 1960s when a group of relay teams from Texas Southern burned up the track and won practically all of the relay events. I had never seen such blazing speed before.
(My memory is really pretty good; I googled “Texas Southern” after I wrote the preceding paragraph and learned that they won all six relays in 1962).
Now I read where they have moved some events, like the shotput, to downtown Lawrence. They probably won’t be moving the javelin down there anytime soon.
