Five years ago

n The Hillsboro City Council passed an ordinance that would strengthen the city?s role in overseeing local museums. The former structure known as the Hillsboro Historical Society is being replaced by a city department known as Hillsboro Museums.

n Robert Kiblinger has begun his first school year as the new superintendent for the Centre district. Prior to taking that position, he was a principal at Council Grove.

n Hillsboro placed sixth, and Marion, in its first year as a league member, placed eighth at the annual Mid-Central Acti-vities Association preseason volleyball tournament in Hills-boro. Ellin?wood won the title.

n Former assistant coaches at their respective schools, Len Coryea and Mike Gardener begin their first season as head coaches at Hillsboro High School and Tabor College, respectively. They succeed popular coaches Dustin McEwen at HHS and Tim McCarty at Tabor.

Ten years ago

n Dan Kinning is Hillsboro?s new police chief, effective today. The decision was finalized Friday to ease the transition when current chief Byron McCarty retires next spring. Kinning has been with the local department for 41⁄2 years.

n Jane Perkins joined the Tabor College staff this fall to help develop a nursing program for the institution. Perkins and the college found out about each other via her son, a Tabor student.

n The coaches of the Mid-Central Activities Association picked Hillsboro as the preseason favorite to win the league in football. HHS, coached by Dustin McEwen, was 9-1 a year ago and returns several key performers, including running back C.J. Hill and wide receiver Tyson Ratz?laff.

n Collette Burton is leading practices for HHS volleyball as the program?s first-year head coach. She succeeds Becky Carlson, who coached the team for 17 years.
