Five years ago

n Hillsboro?s Memorial Day weekend included the annual Family/Folk Festival, a 120th birthday celebration for the city, an all-school reunion attended by about 350 people, a demolition derby and a remembrance service on Memorial Day. World War II veterans living in the area rode through a parade on Saturday and were received warmly by onlookers.

n Matt Vogt, a Tampa native, began his first season as manager of the Hillsboro Municipal Pool.

n Frank Brenneman received the Clarence R. Hiebert Excel?lence in Teaching Award at Tabor College.

n The community of Burns is gearing up to kick off a farmers market every Friday during the summer, starting June 11.

n Marion County received word it will receive a 2004 Homeland Security grant of $498,000; at least $127,000 must be used in law enforcement to prevent terrorism.

n The Hillsboro High School boys won the Class 3A state track-and-field title this weekend while the girls? team, comprised of six freshmen, came home with a second-place plaque. Winning gold medals for the boys were Caleb Marsh in the long jump and Aaron Yoder in the 1,600 meters. JuliAnne Chisholm won the high jump and 300-meter hurdles, Hannah Marsh won the long jump and those two teamed with Kelsey Penner and Jessica Heidel to win the 4×400.

Ten years ago

n Local bicycle-racing fans in Hillsboro had the opportunity to watch a criterium through the streets of downtown Hillsboro on Sunday, with racers from around the state participating.

n The Hillsboro High School girls finished second at the Class 3A state track-and-field meet in Wichita this weekend. Keying their high finish were gold-medal performances by Angela Kroeker in the discus and by Hillsboro?s two undefeated relay teams: the 4×100 team of Jill Hein, Carmen Hein, Jenna Jost and Jacey Boese, and the 4×400 team of Kroeker, Boese, Carmen Hein and Julie Hett. The latter team was awarded gold after the one team that finished ahead of them in the race was disqualified afterward.

n Starting this summer, Tabor College will be offering graduate teacher recertification classes at the Hillsboro campus. The program is being directed by Gary Railsback.

n Goessel moved into its newly completed community center. The $177,000 project includes a community room, city offices and a library.
