Five years ago

• Goessel school board members watched a demonstration of the district’s new automatic external defibrillator during its December meeting. Leading the demonstration was Darryl Thiessen, director of Marion County Emergency Medical Services.

• Centre High School was one of six schools to receive the National Association of Agricul­tural Educators Outstanding Middle/Secondary Agricultural Program award Dec. 7 at the NAAE conference in Kansas City, Mo. Centre received the award for its FFA program, which is led by instructors Gaea Wimmer and Granzow.

• The Hillsboro boys prevailed over Ellinwood in a foul-filled game, 51-31. Kyle Kroeker scored 21 points to lead the Trojans, who improved to 4-1. JuliAnne Chisholm scored 17 points to pace HHS in its 50-43 win over the Eagles. The win bumps the Trojans to 2-3.

• The Marion City Commis­sion was expected to approve at its Dec. 28 meeting a proposal to change city government from a three-member commission to a five-member council. If approved, the change would take effect after the April 2006 elections.

• Going into the Christmas break, both the Tabor College men’s and women’s basketball teams find themselves in first place in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The women are 4-0 in the KCAC and 9-3 overall, while the men are in a four-way tie at 3-1 with a season record of 13-1.

Ten years ago

• Tabor College reached its $200,000 fundraising challenge a few days ahead of schedule. In February 1999, the college’s board of directors accepted a challenge to raise $200,000 by Dec. 31 in order to receive a donation of $100,000 from an anonymous donor.

• Goessel school superintendent Chet Roberts told the USD 411 Board of Education of his desire to start a charter school within the local school. Roberts said he sees the need for additional agricultural and environmental education. He said the state intends to designate 17 new charter schools this year.

• The Hillsboro boys improved to 3-2 with a 52-30 win over Ellinwood. Grant Bru­bacher and Tyler Weinbrenner each scored 11 points to pace HHS. The Trojan girls defeated Ellinwood, 44-34, to improve to 4-1. Shannon Kroeker scored 17 points for Hillsboro.

• Hillsboro senior Jeremy Loewen was selected to play in the 2001 Kansas Shrine Bowl all-star football game.

• Volunteers unloaded 89 truck loads of dirt and manure to form a crown on Tabor College’s Reimer Field in an effort to improve drainage. Eight men provided their farm trucks for the project.

• Two Centre school teachers, Andy Hanson and Russell Hake, moved their home-based computer business, Central Services and Technology of Marion, to 125 E. Main in Marion.
