Five years ago

n Marion County residents will have the opportunity Nov. 2 to cast the ballots for or against a resolution that would allow liquor-by-the-drink in Marion County.

n The Marion County commissioners heard Monday that Marion County and three of its cities will receive nearly $739,000 in federal and state disaster funds for June and July storm damage.

n The Hillsboro High boys’ cross-country team raced to its fifth straight Mid-Central Activities Association title by winning the league race. Kody Borg placed fourth overall to pace the Trojans.

n The HHS tennis doubles team of Erin Wiebe and Lora Andrews placed seventh at the Class 3-2-1A state tournament and the team of Kelsey Kaufman and Amanda Faber placed ninth.

n Hillsboro pastor Tim Kliewer escaped death in a windsurfing accident at Marion Reservoir.

Ten years ago

n A crowd of well-wishers was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of Hillsboro Heights. An estimated $4 million in new business-related buildings has already been committed to the new commercial development on the city’s north edge.

n The Hillsboro High football team rolled to a 62-0 lead after one half and went to complete a 69-7 victory over South­east of Saline in district play. Jeremy Loewen scored the first three touchdowns and piled up 146 yards on only eight carries for the 6-1 Trojans.

n Sonic Drive-In became the first business to open in Hills­boro Heights and had a “VIP test run” Monday night before serving the public on Wednesday.
