Five years ago

n Kim Klein of Hillsboro is a gestational surrogate for a couple in Chicago. The baby she carries was conceived using in vitro fertilization and belongs to the biological parents, who could not have children naturally.

n Area leaders were told by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials that a mechanical, non-chemical approach may be the best way to control blue-green algae blooms at Marion Reservoir. But funding even for a short-term response may take time and effort.

n A new swimming pool was at the top of a long list of potential improvement projects for Hillsboro; the list was developed by the city council and City Administrator Steve Garrett.

n A benefit breakfast raised around $2,500 for the purchase of a thermal-imaging camera for the Hillsboro Fire Department. The breakfast was sponsored by members of Hillsboro Menno­nite Brethren Church in gratitude for the department’s efforts to battle the fire that destroyed the church building in March.

n The Tabor College football team defeated Southwest Assemblies of God, 43-7, in Mike Gardner’s debut as head coach.

n The Marion County commissioners authorized up to $2,000 for a new role as the umbrella government entity for a new group called the Agri-tourism and Marion Reservoir Watershed Coalition. The start-up money will be used for a two-day agri-tourism conference Oct. 22-23 featuring Remelle Farrar of Texas.

Ten years ago

n About 200 Tabor College students made their way downtown for free doughnuts, drinks and door prizes offered by the Hillsboro Chamber of Com­merce as a “Welcome to Hillsboro” gesture.

n Hillsboro High’s football team dominated Halstead, 63-14. C.J. Hill rushed four touchdowns and 160 yards.

n Former HHS head football coach Don Penner was inducted into the Bethel College Hall of Fame. Penner was an all-conference performer in football and track and field in college; he graduated from Bethel in 1956.
