n Lee Leiker started his first school year as superintendent of USD 408, Marion-Florence.
n James Fisher has begun his new job as dean of student development at Tabor College. He was hired about a month before classes began.
n Tabor College has been ranked 45th by U.S. News & World Report among the “best comprehensive colleges-bachelor” institutions that focus on undergraduate education.

n Workers from Pavers Inc. of Salina were busy pouring concrete for the first streets in Hillsboro Heights. If weather cooperates, the work should be finished within the week.
n With the help of Lutheran Health Services, St. Luke Hospital of Marion and Hillsboro Community Medical Center continue working to develop a plan to benefit the operation of the two hospitals. The plan, discussed at the third meeting between the two operations, includes ways to reduce costs, increase services and meet patient needs.
n A fire around noon Saturday did an estimated $200,000 damage to the HRK store in Marion owned by Jim and Bernice Beach. The fire apparently started in a breaker box.
n John and Diane Maxfield have opened The White Oak Inn, a bed and breakfast, at 115 Elm in Marion.
n Marion County and area businesses spent $12,530 in premiums in support of 4-Hers at the 1999 Marion County Fair Livestock Sale Aug. 5. The top-selling steer owned by Lucas Hamm brought $400 from Prairie Products, Hillsboro.
