Hillsboro residents who want to see live trees in front of Emprise Bank when the downtown street renovation project is over earned a split decision at the July 13 city council. Live will trees will be growing in front of the bank, but they won’t be the two golden rain trees that have been there for more than a decade. Officials concluded that the root system of the golden rain trees was to shallow to survive the engineering requirements of the street project.Getting that first driver’s license will be little pricier for Hillsboro High School students after the USD 410 Board of Education decided July 15 to begin charging a $75 fee for driver’s education. Area weather forecasters were predicting a heat index as high as 110 degrees for the week.Marion residents Frances Kreutziger and Lois Weber have invested more than a combined 6,385 hours over the past 12 months to create bibs, lap robes and napkins for friends who need them. The two women are working through the VFW Auxiliary 6958 in Marion.
Tena Loewen, 8-year-old daughter of David and Joanne Loewen, Hillsboro, was among the four finalists in the 2003 Young Writers & Illustrators Awards Contest associated with the “Reading Rainbow” program of KPTS-TV Channel 8. The illustrated book she created, “Sam Makes It Right,” was featured through July 11 in a spot airing on the Wichita-based public television station.

The Marion County Emergency Food Bank reported that its shelves are emptier than usual, thanks to increased demand for goods and a drop in donations. The food bank has assisted 75 families so far this year, according to Janet Bryant, coordinator. She said the situation is a result of a poor area economy.Neighborhoods around Hillsboro have been meeting for block parties as part of a plan promoted by Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce to see such gatherings organized in 55 residential areas of town during July.
The Hillsboro City Council passed an ordinance officially ending the 22-day water emergency in the city caused by a blue-green algae bloom at Marion Reservoir, the city’s source for raw water.

An ad hoc group of citizens calling itself the Hillsboro Linear Trail Committee presented a written proposal to the city council to develop a three-block area of abandoned railroad tracks within the city into a “linear park.” The proposal asked the city to designate $5,000 in the 2003 budget for the first phase of the park from Lincoln Street across Main Street to Ash Street. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was still searching for a man who robbed the Pilsen State Bank in Lincolnville at gunpoint March 20. The robbery, the second to occur at the bank in six months, resulted in the loss of an undisclosed amount of money. No one was injured. Ag Power Inc., owned by Mike and Carolyn Kleiber and Kirby Rector, announced the acquisition of Paul’s Auto from owners Paul and Sheryl Pankratz. Paul had been in the auto-parts store for 37 years. The new owners plan to keep the store’s affiliation with its Carquest supplier. Both of Hillsboro’s voting wards will be assured of new representation on the Hillsboro City Council as the April 2 local election draws near.
