Five years agon Temperatures in the mid to upper 90s didn’t seem to affect the turnout for the Hillsboro Arts & Crafts Fair on Saturday, but it may have shortened their stay, according to Christy Wulf, fair director, as buyers found their purchases quickly and returned home. Police Chief Dan Kinning estimated the crowd at 45,000.
n Judy Christensen, chair of the planning committee of Marion Art in the Park, said “a good crowd” came to this year’s show in Central Park, and that most vendors were reporting strong sales.

Five years agon The Hillsboro City Council passed an ordinance that would strengthen the city’s role in overseeing local museums. The former structure known as the Hillsboro Historical Society is being replaced by a city department known as Hillsboro Museums.
n Robert Kiblinger has begun his first school year as the new superintendent for the Centre district. Prior to taking that position, he was a principal at Council Grove.
n Hillsboro placed sixth, and Marion, in its first year as a league member, placed eighth at the annual Mid-Central Acti-vities Association preseason volleyball tournament in Hills-boro. Ellinwood won the title.

n James Fisher has begun his new job as dean of student development at Tabor College. He was hired about a month before classes began.

Five years agon Marion County commissioners approved a four-mill tax hike Monday that will raise more than $370,000 for rebuilding 35 miles of county hard-surface roads that provide access to Peabody. The action was in response to a plea from Peabody-Burns Superintendent Tom Alstrom, who called the roads a safety hazard for children riding buses.
n Area employers are gearing up for the Aug. 23 implementation of what many are calling the most significant changes to overtime laws in nearly 50 years.
