Five years ago• The Kansas Department of Commerce has approved a block grant of $155,000 to replace 3,700 feet of old waterline along Lincoln Street in Hillsboro. The project includes replacing valves, removing fire hydrants and reconnecting service connections.
• Marion County received an overall B- grade for its care of children in the first Kansas Children’s Report Card for the county. The grade was based on five categories: safety and security, health, education, teen years and child care. Marion County ranged from an A- for education to a D+ for child care.
• The Hillsboro High boys’ basketball team won the Trojan Classic title for the eighth time in 11 years with a 38-31 victory over Hesston. Derek Hamm scored 17 points...

Five years ago• Hillsboro City Administrator Steve Garrett is asking for the community’s continued help in removing debris resulting from the ice storm that blanketed Marion County a week earlier. Specifically, Garrett is asking residents to drag tree debris to the curb, where it will be picked up by city crews.
• Falling tree limbs from the ice storm caused a power outage and fire scare at the Goessel junior/senior high school. The motors of three roof-top heaters overheated, causing smoke to fill classrooms. The west end of the building was evacuated.
• Full-day kindergarten was the main topic of discussion at the Jan. 10 meeting of the USD 408-Marion-Florence Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Lee Leiker said...

Five years ago• About a dozen members of the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church planted and decorated a 20-foot evergreen for Christmas on the vacant lot where their church building once stood. The building was destroyed by fire in March.
• Marion City Commission tentatively approved a fireworks display for New Year’s Eve. The show is planned for the parking lot at the Cooperative Grain & Supply elevator in Marion. Hett Construction and Tampa State Bank will sponsor the event.
• The Goessel City Council hired Joe Boese as its new public works director, which he will add to his duties as the town’s chief of police.
• The state-ranked Hillsboro High boys’ basketball team improved to 5-0 with a 58-48 win over Ellinwood...

Five years agol Students and staff at Goessel Elementary School were forced to move to a temporary location after a gas leak was detected outside the building. After an employee noticed the smell of gas outside a kitchen door, initial repairs were made. But additional leaks were later discovered. Classes were cancelled to allow the gas company to complete necessary inspections and give the staff an opportunity to develop a plan for relocation.
l Wendell Loewen, who teaches at Tabor College about youth, culture and church, led a workshop for some 80 youth workers titled, “Modern Parents and Post-Modern Teens,” at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

Five years ago• A team representing Hillsboro High School took third place in the Class 3A school competition at the 2004-05 High Q academic competition at Washburn University. Members of the team were Robert Jost, Kelsey Kaufman, Victor Rogers and Greta Kliewer. Nancy Thomas was the coach.
• Goessel Junior/Senior High School was recognized for achieving the Standard of Excellence on the 2004 statewide math assessments in seventh through 10th grades.
• The Hillsboro boys’ basketball team opened the season by winning the Dickinson County Classic tournament with a 46-34 win over Abilene. Patrick Harrison led HHS?with 13 points. Meanwhile, the Trojan girls lost to Abilene, 44-42, in the third place game. Julianne Chisholm led HHS...
