n The Hillsboro City Council agreed to allow local voters to decide if building a new swimming pool would be worth raising the city sales tax by one-half cent. The project is estimated to cost around $2 million.

n The Marion City Commis­sion authorized a Salina engineering firm to move ahead with plans for a water-plant upgrade that might keep the city on track to comply with Environmental Protection Agency regulations administered under the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The city would look to the Rural Development Administration for a loan of up to $1.6 million, plus grant money, for the project.

n The Goessel City Council and the USD 411 Board of Educa­tion met jointly at the invitation of Superintendent John Fast to talk about ending the trend of declining enrollment in Goessel schools. The district had registered a decline each year since 1996, losing a total of 68 students and some $440,000 in state support.

n The Tabor College football team capped a heart-stopping end to the 2004 regular season with a 30-29 win over Saint Mary University at Lansing. Two weeks earlier, Tabor won a game in double overtime, then lost the following week in an overtime contest.

n The Tabor College volleyball team lost to Bethel College in five games in the semifinals of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The...

n Marion County residents will have the opportunity Nov. 2 to cast the ballots for or against a resolution that would allow liquor-by-the-drink in Marion County.

n The Marion County commissioners heard Monday that Marion County and three of its cities will receive nearly $739,000 in federal and state disaster funds for June and July storm damage.

n The Hillsboro High boys’ cross-country team raced to its fifth straight Mid-Central Activities Association title by winning the league race. Kody Borg placed fourth overall to pace the Trojans.

n The HHS tennis doubles team of Erin Wiebe and Lora Andrews placed seventh at the Class 3-2-1A state tournament and the team of Kelsey Kaufman and Amanda Faber placed ninth.

n The Marion County Health Department reported it should receive enough flu vaccine to immunize at-risk residents and perhaps others. A national shortage developed when a leading manufacturer of the vaccine in Britain closed its doors.
