Five years ago• Goessel school board members watched a demonstration of the district’s new automatic external defibrillator during its December meeting. Leading the demonstration was Darryl Thiessen, director of Marion County Emergency Medical Services.
• Centre High School was one of six schools to receive the National Association of Agricultural Educators Outstanding Middle/Secondary Agricultural Program award Dec. 7 at the NAAE conference in Kansas City, Mo. Centre received the award for its FFA program, which is led by instructors Gaea Wimmer and Granzow.

Five years ago• Referendum ballots will be mailed to Marion County residents this week asking if they would support a destination resort casino here. About 8,950 ballots will be mailed, according to Carol Maggard, county clerk and election officer.
• Sponsors of the 12th annual Marion County Toy Run distributed $10,200 and 26 bicycles to representatives from charitable organizations from Hillsboro, Marion, Peabody and Goessel.
• After 15 years of teaching at Tabor College, Bible professor Lynn Jost was appointed academic dean and associate professor of Old Testament at the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. His new position will begin July 1.

Five years ago• About 20 people attended the annual legislative coffee Saturday in Hillsboro, featuring Rep. Don Dahl and Sen Jim Barnett. Health-care costs and school funding topped the list of issues addressed.
• Hillsboro natives Justin Brown and Greg Carlson, both 17, are contributing to the basketball accomplishments of Kansas School for the Deaf in Olathe. Brown is averaging more than 12 points a game and Carlson nearly 14.
• The Hillsboro boys lost to Hesston, 54-50, in the finals of their Class 3A sub-state tournament at Lyons. The Trojans ended the season, 21-2. The Hillsboro girls, meanwhile, ended their season with a 63-41 loss at the hands of Hesston in the tournament finals. HHS finished 15-8 while Hesston improved...

Five years ago• Tabor College received the largest estate gift in its history, estimated between $400,000 and $500,000, thanks to the combined gift of the Daniel H. Hiebert and Ruth E. Hiebert estates. Daniel Hiebert was born in Hillsboro in 1899, graduated from Tabor in 1914 and had a medical practice in Provincetown, Mass., for 53 years.
• The principal partner in the Windover at Hillsboro housing development said last week his company’s project continues to move forward.

Five years ago• The Kansas Department of Commerce has approved a block grant of $155,000 to replace 3,700 feet of old waterline along Lincoln Street in Hillsboro. The project includes replacing valves, removing fire hydrants and reconnecting service connections.
• Marion County received an overall B- grade for its care of children in the first Kansas Children’s Report Card for the county. The grade was based on five categories: safety and security, health, education, teen years and child care. Marion County ranged from an A- for education to a D+ for child care.
• The Hillsboro High boys’ basketball team won the Trojan Classic title for the eighth time in 11 years with a 38-31 victory over Hesston. Derek Hamm scored 17 points...
