Memories of past jobs enlighten

I’ll bet if you asked seasoned citizens like me what kind of interesting jobs they had in their early years you would hear some very interesting things.Back in 1970 when I worked at the University of Kansas Printing Service my hours there were 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. That gave me the opportunity to take on a second job in the afternoon. I would eat my lunch in the car on the way to North Lawrence to the Exhibitor Film Delivery terminal where I delivered packages all over town and also picked up freight from several local companies from about 1:30 to 5:30. One memorable pickup in particular was Curtis 1000, which printed envelopes and shipped all over the country.

Book about Marion is ready to go

Our hearty thanks goes to our Marion resident historian, Dick Varenhorst, whose knowledge about Marion was indispensable in assisting us in publishing the “Marion Memories, Vol. 2” book.The books are here and ready for the initial release from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in the new lobby of St. Luke Hospital. It is exciting that Les Broadstreet, who wrote the foreword for the book, plans to be on hand to autograph a piece of history in photos that he personally had a hand in creating for so many years.

‘New’ doors a nice deal for office

We have been sporting new front doors on the Free Press office since Labor Day. Actually, they’re not new doors, but are new to us. We have always wanted to have real commercial doors on our building.When Emprise Bank demolished the former location of Walter’s Shoe Repair and Silver Shears, located just north of their building, I asked what they were going to do with the doors. They offered them to me.
If you’ve been away for more than 20 years, the Silver Shears door was Wayne’s Barber Shop and Vernon Bartel’s Barber Shop before that.
So when you enter the Free Press now, you are walking through a bit of history. The doors are in the same relative position they were up the street.

Class hears of book projects

I taught a class at Tabor College, or should I say I told some students about my experiences with book printing this past week. It was on the top floor of the Lohrenz Building, which is quite a trip if you are packing about 100 pounds of books.One of the most successful fundraising books I’ve been involved with was, “Year of the Storms,” which was about the Hesston tornado that occurred in 1990. After I had asked the class how many remembered it, I realized most of the students weren’t even born yet.

Fall sports edition is a miracle

It has always impressed me to watch our staff methodically and meticulously assemble the fall sports edition, “Extra Point.” It’s almost a miracle it even happens when you consider the number of teams there are at the seven schools we feature.It takes our entire staff working together to make it happen. And it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our many loyal advertisers who get behind it and make it financially possible.
Last, but not least, we appreciate the cooperation of school administrators and coaches for coordinating the photo shoots and interviews about the upcoming seasons.
We’re hoping each student performs to the best of his or her ability and gains lessons learned on the court, field and course that...
