Living in a same-day world

I was reading in Wired Magazine that some of the bigger retailers in the U.S. are going to same-day delivery on some items, and are testing it in some of the bigger trade areas in the country.

I’ve got big news for them. I have had same-day delivery ever since I moved to Hillsboro in 1977. All I do is go down the street, for example to the hardware store, and get what I need and I can have what I want in 10 minutes. No shipping either, which at times has become a bigger expense than the item itself.

I heard on “Jimmy Kimmel” that Wal-Mart is even considering having shoppers deliver items to people in their own neighborhoods for a discount.

Kimmel said if you had a $25 discount or a $2,000 TV in your possession, which one would...

Convertible has at least one benefit

I am sitting here thinking that if one has never owned and driven a convertible in his or her life, they have really missed out on a lot.

One example is the advantage I had in summer 1964. When I got home late from work, I could take a shower and drive down the road with the top down, stand up, have my hair dry in seconds and be ready for the evening.

Here’s a trick that works on my computer—I’m not sure if works on all computers—and is very handy when reading Web pages that you need to scroll down frequently—like when reading some of the sports sites’ message boards.

Hitting the space bar moves the page down one full screen so there is no more manual scrolling and it saves a lot of work. Let me know if it doesn’t...

Meeting stirs old memories

Working with the All School Reunion committee last week brought back memories from days long ago.

We were working on the HHS alumni version of the Oracle, which should go in the mail later this week. We were talking about the Adobe House Museum when it used to sit out in the country southwest of town.

I remembered riding my bike out there and hanging around in the old house. It was just off the half-mile line road that cuts between one of the sections. This is where the early Mennonite settlers landed and lived way back then.

This half-mile road is also where many young couples used to “park” as it was called. I wonder if this is still practiced by the younger generations.

Tabor choir has a great sound

The Tabor College choir is an amazing group of about 50 young people from many different states, and the sound they put out is gorgeous.

I meant to write about them last week, but my column was already written by the time I heard them at our church on Sunday morning.

Director Brad Vogel has amazing power in his hands and arms. When he raises them and moves them, an awesome sound comes out. What a treat.

At the carry-in meal afterward I nearly had to beg one of the choir members who sat at our table to take my zwiebach. After a lot of coaxing, she finally took it but didn’t eat it.

We finally shared it, if she could have the top. I always like the bottom because it will hold more jelly. Except there wasn’t any jelly this...
