HCF grant will help feed local families

The Hillsboro Community Foundation facilitates charitable giving in support of projects and programs that enhance the quality of life in Hillsboro.

We, at Main Street Ministries, are thrilled about a $2,500 grant from the Hillsboro Community Foundation for our food bank.The grant will be used to buy food from Hillsboro markets to stock food-bank shelves.

For each of the past five years the food bank has exceeded the year before in terms of numbers served. Currently we serve, on average, 300 people each month from close to 100 families. Each month, we add 10 to 15 families to the list.

On their behalf, and ours, we would like to offer big thank-you to the foundation for this recent grant.

Grant will support more improvements

The Hillsboro Playground Committee would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the Hillsboro Community Founda­tion for the $1,750 grant recently awarded to our group.

This generous addition to our fundraising will help us add a new handicap-accessible swing and surrounding mulch to our city park. We appreciate all of the community support on this project and thank everyone who made this grant funding possible.

We believe in the power of play for our children and are pleased that the foundation supports us in our endeavors.

Hillsboro became ‘home’ for family

When moving to Hillsboro in August 2002, we did not know what to expect. Hillsboro was a rural town; we had lived in metropolitan and international settings. Marion County was agricultural; my pocket knife is about the extent of my toolbox!

Enrollment at the local high school was about 250; we came from a city in Indiana with a high school of 2,500. Many had told us Hillsboro and Marion County were difficult places in which to be accepted; we were actively engaged in community service in Huntington.

The Mennonite faith was predominant in Hillsboro; we had little understanding of Anabap­tism. Tabor College’s constituen­cy was located throughout the Great Plains and in California; we had never...

Time to end death penalty for good

Recently, the Death Penalty Information Center released its year-end report showing that the death penalty is on the decline around the country. The report found there were fewer than 100 death sentences nationwide, and only one in Kansas over the past year.

Four states in four years have repealed their death-penalty laws as the public continues to lose confidence in the system. This year, the Gallup Poll reported the lowest level of support for the death penalty in nearly 40 years.

A more detailed CNN poll showed that more people preferred a sentence of life without parole over the death penalty for those convicted of capital murder.
