Researcher asks for kids’ WW II storiesFor many of us, it is hard to imagine what life was like in the United States during World War II. Virtually every person in the nation was affected by the war on a daily basis. Scrap drives, bond sales, patriotic displays, rationing books and shortages of food staples, gasoline and rubber were a part of daily life on the home front.
Much has been written about the lives of our nation’s men and women during that time. There are few among us who do not know about the experiences of GI Joe and Rosie the Riveter.

Public servants take pride in their serviceMay 7-11 has been declared National Public Service Recognition Week. The purpose of the designation is to draw attention to the many workers who positively impact our communities.
As Americans, we rarely think about the people who make our country the place it is. There are many who serve at the federal level, including our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines to those who deliver our mail.
At the state level, we have those who serve to build and protect our highways and watch over and protect our food supply.
Even at the local level, we have people serving to make Hillsboro a better place to live like teachers, ambulance drivers, police and firefighters, those who provide us safe drinking...

Scammers may be calling local seniorsThe Marion County Department on Aging last week received information from two individuals who received phone calls about a medical card to use with Medicare.
The caller wanted to verify the person’s address and phone number, then asked for banking account routing number. Once both of these individuals refused to give this information, the caller hung up.
This appears to be a scam. Many times scammers will target an area for a couple of weeks, then move on to another area before the word gets out.
Remember: Never give your Medicare number or banking information over the phone to anyone you do not know.
One of the potential victims asked how she could be sure the caller was being honest with...

Pellet guns can kill innocent creatures
Guns can kill. Pellet guns can kill pets and other innocent creatures. Even strict regulations and strong legislation cannot instill good conscience and humane perspective in persons who feel they must use those weapons for less than honorable purposes.
I pray for them. I pray for their victims.

Local music students achieve at state, tooMusic is an integral, vibrant part of life. The lifelong process of learning, performing, creating and appreciating music brings meaning and richness to our heritage and culture.
Marion High School students Caroline Collett (state choir) and Alicia Mahoney (state band) along with Hillsboro High School’s Olivia Kliewer (state choir) and Daniele Melton, Riley Loewen, Caleb Bettles and Graham Pankratz (state middle level honor choir), were chosen by audition and performed at the Kansas Music Educators Association convention in Wichita.
Also performing was the HHS Concert Choir. Performing at this event may be comparable to winning at the highest level of athletics.
