Kansas leads the way to protect air qualityThe Friday, Oct. 19, issue of the Washington Post had a front page story titled, “Power Plant Rejected Over Carbon Dioxide For First Time.”
The story detailed the Thursday announcement by Kansas Department of Health and Environment denying the air permit for Sunflower Electric Power to construct two 700-megawatt coal plants at Holcomb.
KDHE became the first government agency in the United States to cite carbon dioxide emissions as the reason for rejecting an air permit for a proposed coal-fired electricity generating plant, saying that the greenhouse gas threatens public health and the environment.
With this decision, Kansas has become a leader in recognizing and acting on the...

City would gain by respecting differencesMost people will likely agree on at least one thing: The issue of liquor by the drink in the city of Hillsboro ignites much passion and opinion; there will always be two distinctly opposing sides on the issue.
However, the matter was taken to a vote by the county in 2004. The majority of the citizens voted to allow the sale of alcohol within the county.
Because of our democratic society and how such a society functions, I am finding it difficult to understand why our city officials are expending time and energy discussing the matter of liquor by the drink in a restaurant setting.
How can it even be considered “to isolate it (liquor) to one or more zoning districts.” The people did...

Someone was killed by drunken driver
I wonder how many people remember that in 1994 a Hillsboro resident was killed by a drunken driver not more than a mile away from our city limits.
I realize many residents have moved to Hillsboro since that day and wouldn’t know about it. But I want to speak against liquor by the drink because of the danger it can create on our roadways.
The person who was killed was my daughter. People who drink don’t always limit themselves. Since I am a mother against drunk drivers, I wish Hillsboro would not make liquor by the drink available.

If this is ‘dumb,’ then sign me up for moreThis is in regard to the editorial column by Dale Suderman last week. I would like to state that I am glad my husband has been “dumb” enough, for the past six years, to be away from his family periodically defending Mr. Suderman’s, among others, right to free speech.
I also relish in my family and friends’ “dumbness” in supporting my husband, the military, and the present leaders of our nation as they protect us against “non-existent dangers” from near and far.
If “being dumb” equals being vigilant, please sign me up for the next six years. With the leftist slant of the cartoons and editorials, I am glad this paper will kindle many fires and help to keep us...
