Brookens ad was misleading for voters

Over a trip home for the July 4 weekend, I read an open letter to the voters from State Rep. Bob Brookens that was so misleading I felt a public airing of the facts was in order.

Rep. Brookens claims in his letter that his opponent is financed by special-interest groups and that he is being targeted because he did vote to eliminate the corporate income tax.

Public campaign finance reports, however, show that Mr. Bookens has taken from several political action committees (PACs) during his two years in office. PACs are formed for the sole purpose of distributing money to candidates that agree with the group’s positions. In other words, they are special-interest groups.

Over four reporting...

Input requested re: city funding issue

The editor wrote a very interesting editorial in the paper this week (June 23). As a city councilman I would like to help all the groups that request money, but budget constraints just don’t allow us that freedom.

I think helping Communities In Schools, the Senior Center and Main Street Ministries would be the right thing to do. People get ill, they get laid off work and health problems can affect their income to a great degree. If I was in that situation I would like to be able to receive help for my family if I needed it.

I should not have lumped everyone who receives help into the same category of people that I used to have to deal with (as police chief). I think that problem can be...

Evaluate how issues will affect county

I received two phone calls this week from a group doing a telephone poll. The group used initials as their title with letter C being the first letter. When I asked the first caller to explain what the initials meant, he hung up.

The second time I participated in the survey. The questions were very leading and slanted to one viewpoint. They didn’t encourage opposing ideas. They were negative about the sales tax increase and Rep. Brookens.

I’m hoping your newspaper can provide information for your readers about this group and how the poll is funded.

I’d like to respond to the letter from the president of the state Chamber of Commerce published earlier in local papers. He’s an advocate...

Local student learns through campaign

Growing up in Hillsboro, I’ve always been surrounded by a close-knit community that has nurtured me during my most impressionable years. I grew up in the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church and was a member of the youth group there. I was actively involved in sports at Hillsboro High School and was a member of the Technology Student Association and the Letterman’s Club.

After graduating high school, I decided to further my education at Tabor College on a track and field scholarship and pursue a degree in athletic training. After my first semester I decided that athletic training wasn’t the thing for me. I had always been interested in politics and decided I should study political...

Chamber responds to Brookens’ critique

The Kansas Chamber is the leading business advocacy organization, representing small and large businesses alike employing more than 100,000 Kansans across our state. Our board of directors passed a data-driven, unified agenda in support of streamlining government and reducing the cost of doing business in Kansas.

When seeking to bring additional businesses to Kansas, no one champions higher taxes as an additional benefit. The Chamber will always defend Kansas entrepreneurs and taxpayers against policies that inhibit their ability to increase capital investment, grow private-sector jobs and reduce the burden on government services. Responsible government and a friendly business climate can...
