Community has been welcoming to others

Living in Hillsboro has been a wonderful place to call home for the past nine years of our lives. Though we came as “outsiders” with our East Coast culture, we never felt slighted because we weren’t “Mennonite” and that we didn’t have the “right” last name.

Our children received a wonderful education at USD 410, our church became our family, and our neighborhood shares similar values: There’s not a neighbor whose door I would not knock on to borrow a few eggs.

But there is something else that radiates among our community that makes me very proud to live here as well. My friend, Kenny Johnson, moved to Oakwood Manor several months ago. I got to know Kenny last year while...

Thanks to everyone who supports the fair

Every summer the county fair comes to town. People from every corner of the county come to exhibit, sightsee and experience the fair. It is a three-day venture for which many kids have worked all year to exhibit their animals, works of art, educational displays, and so on. The fair hosts a time for making lifelong memories.

I grew up in 4-H and know that it is where I want to raise my children. The benefits of 4-H are endless and there is something for everyone to experience, learn, and grow. The county fair was a very important part of my childhood and I want to be able to pass those kinds of memories on to my children.

So, as a 4-H parent and fair board member, I would like to say...

Leaving by choice, because of family

I want to set the record straight. As many of you may have heard, it is true that I am leaving Hillsboro. My last day in the clinic will be July 20. However, contrary to what some may have heard, I did not get fired!

For some time, my folks’ health has been declining. Additionally, both of my sons live—or will be living, when my younger gets out of active duty in July with the Air Force—in Springfield, Mo. They have informed me they do not intend to live in Kansas again.

As neither I nor my husband have family in Kansas, I have contemplated a move that would allow me to be more involved in, and much closer, to both factions of my family.

An opportunity to practice medicine in...

Credit for first ‘Stroll’ goes to many folks

The first Marion Merchants Art and Music Stroll June 12 was very successful, bringing strollers from Sedgwick County as far afield as Kansas City, Mo., Hutchinson, Salina, Manhattan and Topeka. Conversations and guest books indicate that visitors came from all surrounding counties and, of course, from Marion County itself.

We would like to thank our participating merchants: Bearly Makin’ It, Central Parks Antiques, Country Lakes Cafe, Down on the Corner, Downtown Eatery, Flint Hills Gold, Gambinos, Great Plains Computers, Red Fox Cottage, River Mill Woods, Sew What and Sunflower Antiques.

The day was made special by our artists and musicians: Michael Beeler, Chester Brown...

Germany guests grateful for assistance

I am writing from Germany as our vacation is at its end. I want to thank all who were so nice and helpful to us as we visited your wonderful city.

My daughter, Eileen Hendricks (living at this time by my sister, Denise Schwertfeger), graduated from Hillsboro High School this year. Wow! We are very proud of her.

We learned a lot about your small but big town and it was great! We are looking forward to coming again as soon as possible.

I would especially like to thank one person very much, Mr. Malvin Schmidt. It has been a long time since I have met such a good person. On May 31 of this year we had our credit card, bank card and my last bit of cash stolen from us while asleep at my...
