Funding does not equate to ‘education’I read with interest Bob Woelk’s column on government involvement in education (March 13). It seemed to me he was talking about both funding and regulation.
I taught school for several years and have been involved with schools for many years. I can assure you that the quality of the students’ education has very little correlation to the money spent per student.
For example, I’ve known chemistry classes that only used chemicals that could be bought in any grocery store or brought from home. Basic physics was taught with things like a bicycle, a stick and a fulcrum, a string and a weight. Talk to these students a few years later and most will tell you how much they are using of what...

Column distorts state stand on schoolsAs a Kansas school teacher for 33 years, in public and private high schools and also private and state colleges, I felt compelled to respond to Bob Woelk’s mischaracterization of what the Kansas Legislature is attempting to do with the House bills he described in last week’s paper (“Free Falling,” March 13).
To quote Mr. Woelk: “One of the bills would no longer allow teachers to deduct union dues from paychecks.” This is simply untrue. What occurred in the past is that dues for political action from the KNEA were deducted from teacher’s paychecks automatically. A teacher had to request that they not be deducted.
I can tell you from experience that heavy pressure was exerted...

Canceling tours is‘perception politics’
My office just finished notifying hundreds of Kansans that their requests to visit the White House have been declined. The White House has informed Congress that as of March 9, White House tours are cancelled indefinitely due to sequestration.
Every spring and summer, thousands of students, families, veterans and other tour groups travel to our nation’s capital to enjoy all of the history and sights our capital city has to offer. To arbitrarily deny access to a taxpayer-funded, historical building, such as the White House, is seemingly political and clearly cynical.
Sequestration has impacted every branch of government. Like the White House, my office is facing cuts to our...

Our employees are not doing their jobA recent article in another newspaper about the proposed state constitutional amendment to prohibit courts from making decisions about school funding includes this statement: “But supporters argued they’re trying to make sure elected legislators make decisions about state spending instead of unelected judges, according to the Associated Press.”
Our three-branch government system is established to allow checks and balances between the three branches and such an amendment would be contrary to that concept.
In fact, the court probably made it’s decision on school funding because the legislature wasn’t doing it's job. And the legislature’s track record seems to support that...

Salem Home leader worthy of praiseI?have been a member of the workforce for 40-plus years and have witnessed various leadership styles. Working at Salem Home under Kris Erickson has been, by far, the most pleasurable.
Kris is up-front, no-nonsense and to the point about his expectations. He does not micro-manage or belittle. He does not dominate with an iron fist.
He has compassion for his employees as well as the nursing home residents; and he truly cares about each of them.
He is approachable—always with an open-door policy—and listens to each and every person that comes to him. He may not always agree—and will tell you so—as well as give an explanation why. He will often go on to give suggestions, or “food for...
