In running for county commissioner, I was happy to see I had an opponent. It is a sad thing to behold when you step into the voting booth, look at the ballot and realize there are only a few, if any, choices to make.
An election victory by default (only one candidate) actually serves no purpose other than to fill a position. It does not vindicate the actions of an incumbent nor does it give voters a chance to pick a new direction.
Gary Lewis, by choosing to run against me, volunteered to offer a new direction to Marion County citizens, and has stated it is time for a change. However, other than making a few de facto accusations in his campaign literature, he has offered no specifics for...

Thanks, donors, for giving blood Oct. 11
On behalf of the hospitals and patients served by the American Red Cross Blood Services, we want to thank all the generous Hillsboro-area residents who turned out to give blood at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church Oct. 11.
We had 43 donors come to meet the need in our community and throughout the country.
Donors can make an appointment to give blood at the next drive, which will be Dec. 7 at the Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church, by calling 1-800-733-2767.

This is with concern about the Star Tribune Sack political cartoon of Sept. 26. It is in line with the Band of 550 attack on the GOP candidate for president. Those criticisms are overblown and distractions from what are the important issues for this time in our country.
We do have a free press with such shamefully biased media. The present administration is getting a free ride. The international situations are a blaring example of coverup and misfortune.
I would trust an experienced businessman before a politician, with no record of success, to improve our economy.
We are beginning to see signs of increasing problems in Marion County. Just one is that the commuters to high-paying jobs in larger...

Beware of what you hear from candidates
Romney is talking about things I?like to hear when he speaks of the future of all Americans.
Remember when George H.W. Bush was a candidate for president and would say with every campaign speech he made: “Read my lips, there will be no new taxes on any American citizens of this great nation under my leadership.”
Six months after taking office as president, he said: “There will have to be an increase in taxes on all Americans.” And there was.

I just read David Vogel’s column about “lunchroom politics” and felt the need to write this letter. In his column, David points out that the new dietary guidelines have been set at 850 calories per day for high school students.
He then goes on to point out how little the amount of food this would be using popular fast-food choices and criticizes the efforts to help the people who prepare school lunches make fruits and vegetables more appealing to children. I just need to make a couple of points here.
First, David’s picture looks like he is not likely to be a parent who has had to try to get a child to eat his vegetables or something other than dessert or junk food. Maybe I am wrong in assuming...
