Bond hits farmers when they’re down

I am very much opposed to the school bond that we will vote on in June. I feel it is more a want and wish list than a needs list. The number of students is declining each year.

The part of the bond proposal that I oppose most is to build a new sports stadium with Tabor College. I do not feel that a private college should be allowed to use tax money to build a new stadium. The school district already has a good football field with lights.

The farmers and land owners will pay a big part of the taxes on this bond. The farmers are having a difficult time with the loss to their wheat crop due to the freeze. Add to this the cost of fuel and fertilizer and equipment.

It seems like this added tax...

New TAPP approach seemed to work well

This year the junior and senior parents met and decided to try something different for the Trojan After Prom Party. We still provided a safe, fun atmosphere for the students without alcohol or drugs, but we chose to bus the students to The Alley, a recreational facility in Wichita that has go-carts, bowling, billiards, and arcades.

The TAPP committee also provided extra activities like karaoke, card tournament, chair massages and inflatable activities.

In the past, TAPP provided activities and games in the 4-H building at the fairgrounds, but this option required extensive decorating to create a fun, festive atmosphere. The extensive decorating also required extensive time commitment.

Last...

Remember well-being of all other children

Considering the recent events in Virginia, I am reminded of a true story about a woman who held high office in another state. She was a widow, raising handsome twin sons as a single mom.

This accomplished mother devoted her life to her boys, providing the best educational opportunities and a nurturing, safe home.

In the customary spring ritual of the boys’ senior year, they attended high school prom. As the young couples stood with classmates waiting to enter the dance, a carload of teen boys passed in the street nearby.

A gunshot erupted from the car window, not directly hitting any of the bystanders. However, the bullet ricocheted off the building and passed through the heads of...

First variety night deemed a success

Since their was no news coverage of the Marion County Community Theatre Company Country-wide Variety Night, I wanted to let the public know it was a huge success.

The evening started with the sounds of The Greenhorns (who have Marion County connections through Goessel).

They are a country band consisting of the following members: Dan Carlson of Falun; Gregg Eichorn of McPherson; Jerry Jones of Lindsborg; K.D. “Smitty” Schmidt and Rollin Schmidt, both of Goessel.

Next was Marion High School senior Joel Zeiner, who is part of the MHS drum line and performed a solo on the drums.

MHS junior Cassie Legg presented a funny solo humorous performance titled “Laughing Wild.”

Barbara...

Dog owners, take care of your animals

We often hear complaints about all the stray cats in town. However, my beef is with the dog owners.

I really wish the dog owners who keep their dogs tethered up or even outside all day and night would have a little consideration for their neighbors.

Many of the dogs are outside for more than eight hours at a time with no food or water and they’re able to get tangled up around things they can’t free themselves from.

It may not bother the dog owners, but not everyone cares to listen to your dogs bark all day and night. It’s not the dogs’ fault.
