If this is ‘dumb,’ then sign me up for moreThis is in regard to the editorial column by Dale Suderman last week. I would like to state that I am glad my husband has been “dumb” enough, for the past six years, to be away from his family periodically defending Mr. Suderman’s, among others, right to free speech.
I also relish in my family and friends’ “dumbness” in supporting my husband, the military, and the present leaders of our nation as they protect us against “non-existent dangers” from near and far.
If “being dumb” equals being vigilant, please sign me up for the next six years. With the leftist slant of the cartoons and editorials, I am glad this paper will kindle many fires and help to keep us...

Blood drive exceeded goal of organizersWe would like to thank the people who came to donate blood at the American Red Cross blood drive Aug. 19 and also to all who volunteered to help make everything work smoothly.
We can feel proud that each had a part in making blood available for those who need it.
There were 61 productive pints with five first-time donors. We exceeded our goal.
The next blood drive will be Oct. 15 at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

Support made the 2007 fair a successThe Marion County Fair Association would like to thank all the people who helped make the 2007 Marion County Fair a success. Thanks to all of the volunteers that worked the events, all the people who showed up to see the attractions and everyone who paid their hard-earned money to attend the arena shows.
This year’s earlier fair date didn’t seem to be a deterrent. The carnival company was happy with its location and the number of tickets it sold and expressed interest in returning next year.
We tried a different event in the arena on Friday night that was met with mixed reviews, but the figure-8 races seemed to show promise.
The fair board is looking for ways to improve the fair every...

Peabody a good host for baseball tourneyI had the privilege as a Cal Ripken Baseball official of being a part of the just completed 9-year-old Cal Ripken Kansas State Tournament of Champions held in Peabody. The tournament featured district champions from the state who were vying for a berth in the eight-state 2007 Midwest Plains Regional at Derby.
The Peabody Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken organization did an excellent job of hosting an exciting and fair baseball tournament. Jonathan Richstatter, tournament director, and the many volunteers that worked with him are to be commended for their outstanding job.
Not only was baseball the spotlight during the four-day tournament, but sportsmanship and team play was promoted throughout. It was...

Farm bill holds key to algae solutionThe death of three dogs after contact with Marion Reservoir water (July 11 issue) may be linked to an algae bloom after all of the evidence is examined.
But the event once again reminds us the problem of water quality still exists with siltation and nitrogen/phosphorus loading.
This season’s heavier than usual rainfall in the watersheds that feed runoff water to Marion Reservoir has likely carried silt laden with fertilizer residues in even larger amounts than in normal rainfall years.
For the past two years many grassroots groups have pushed for reform in the writing of the 2007 farm bill to move payments to farmers from production-based commodity subsidies to conservation programs that...
