Commissioners: Defend the people

 

The election is over and the jail issue is done. Commis­sioners, you had your fair opportunity to present your case at public hearings. At the hearings and at the election, the people said, “No.”

Commissioner Hein has started up another proposal. Commissioner, it’s over. Sheriff-elect Rob Craft was quoted in the Free Press as saying, “When I sit down with the commissioners to talk about the jail and how to approach a solution....” To Sheriff-elect Craft let me say: You were elected as sheriff; put yourself into performing your job and do not distract yourself with a done jail issue.

'Fill the Bus' an important success

Main Street Ministries has received a huge outpouring of generosity from the Hillsboro community. The “Fill the Bus” food drive was a great success and the timing was perfect.

Use of the Main Street Ministries food bank has doubled in the past 24 months. Families who come to the food bank are given one box of food—enough to feed a family of four for four to five days—once every four weeks.

In 2006, 365 boxes of food were given out. In 2007 it increased to well over 500 boxes and this year we will most likely exceed 800 boxes of food.

Food drives are a vital part of keeping the shelves stocked. The local Boy Scouts collected more than 1,700 pounds of food on Nov. 15 in cooperation with the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce to...

Senior center needs financial assistance

 

I would like to thank the people of Hillsboro for supporting the senior center’s soup-and-pie supper on Saturday, Nov. 8. There were so many people that they ran out of pie. I don’t think that has happened before.

I worked for the Hillsboro Senior Center for 15 years and am still helping when needed.

The center is struggling financially right now, and I was very disappointed that when the center board went to the city council and asked for help, the council voted no.

The center serves 30 to 45 people every day and delivers dinners to 10 to 15 people every day, people who can’t drive anymore. By doing this, they get a hot meal every day and I’m sure that some people get to stay...

Obama: Protect the pre-born’s right to life

 

An open letter to Barack Obama....

I must admit I was part of the 49 percent of Americans who were not thrilled by your victory in the polls. Although the electoral college gave you a landslide victory, the actual count of voters gives you a slim margin over John McCain and should not be considered a “mandate.”

I am not what you would call the typical conservative voter. Although I am registered as a Republican, I made that choice largely because registering as an independent gives you no voice in the primary elections.
