Chamber responds to Brookens’ critique

The Kansas Chamber is the leading business advocacy organization, representing small and large businesses alike employing more than 100,000 Kansans across our state. Our board of directors passed a data-driven, unified agenda in support of streamlining government and reducing the cost of doing business in Kansas.

When seeking to bring additional businesses to Kansas, no one champions higher taxes as an additional benefit. The Chamber will always defend Kansas entrepreneurs and taxpayers against policies that inhibit their ability to increase capital investment, grow private-sector jobs and reduce the burden on government services. Responsible government and a friendly business climate can...

Arizona’s law: Read it before commenting

This letter is in response to John Griffin’s column titled, “MLB, NCAA should make a stand against racist law” (May 12 issue).

First, let me say I am an immigrant. I came to this country legally, I assimilated, I learned the English language and I obeyed the law. I did not illegally come here, didn’t demand other people cater to my needs, didn’t evade paying taxes, didn’t work illegally without a work visa, didn’t use any emergency rooms as a primary care facility; nor did I mooch off of any type of social welfare programs.

Nope, I came here legally, worked legally, took a citizenship test (knowing the English language was part of it), then naturalized, becoming a United...

Resignation comes with mixed feelings

It has been with much struggle that I came to the final conclusion during spring break that it is time for me to resign. Though I know this decision brings regret for some, for others, a sense of relief.

There has been pressure for some time from a few for me to leave; however, I was determined to do so only when I felt God was leading me to do so and the time was best for the students, the band program here in Hillsboro and also for myself and my family.

I have a variety of reasons why I feel it is time for me to move on. I feel it is time to pursue other musical goals and opportunities which I have long laid aside: writing, arranging and recording music in addition to other musical...

‘Rite of passage’ really a stupid mistake

As we enter the warm months of spring and early summer, a so-called “rite of passage” for some of our community’s youth has already begun. A beer party that became a beer-bust occurred April 17 and was listed in the sheriff’s report in last week’s paper.

Ask almost any high school student, and it becomes evident that most of our local kids, and a lot of their parents, have heard about it by now.

As word of the “party” gets around, most folks shrug their shoulders and say something like “kids will be kids.” However, as the mother of a 20-year-old son who lost his life four years ago due to use of alcohol, I can’t remain silent.

I also feel an added sense of outrage...

Marion missed out with flight group

I am the local representative of the Heart of America Free Flight Association. (I have owned a home in Marion for 18 years.)

As you probably know by now, if you read local publications or attend Marion City Council meetings, this association sponsored its annual meeting and contest in Marion last year and eagerly planned to return again this Father’s Day weekend for the 13th year of the competition.

The meet has been previously held in the Kansas City area. Doug Kjellin and Margo Yates, of the Marion City Chamber of Commerce, have frequently described the favorable economic impact this fledging event had upon our city and our immediate surrounding area.

Anyone who has participated in planning a...
