Tax double-talk

from our governor?

 

Am I hearing some double-talk from Gov. Brownback? One side of his face is saying I will cut your taxes by eliminating the personal income tax. The other side says that in the meantime I will increase your taxes by eliminating some deductions.

If the income tax is eliminated, dropping these deductions will provide only short-term relief and at a time when the common people don’t need any more taxes.

You ask, is eliminating the deductions a tax? Yes. That will mean in effect these deductions will now be taxed. Anything we pay that goes to the government, including local entities, is a tax. They may call it a fee, but it goes to the government to pay its “expenses.” They may call it a...

Commissioners voice opposition to SB-17

 

Editor: Following is an open letter sent to the state legislators serving Marion County: State Sen. Jay Emler, State Rep. Don Schroeder and State Rep. John Barker.

The Marion County Commis­sion has become aware of a Senate bill (SB-317) from last year that will be brought up for consideration again in the next legislative session. We are going on record as strongly opposed to SB-317 due to the severe adverse ramifications it will have on Marion County plus the 104 other counties that comprise the state of Kansas.

The property-tax exemption for machines and fixtures passed in 2006 reduced Marion County revenue more than $700,000 annually. The Keystone Pipeline Exemption denied...

Dueling philosophies can’t co-exist

In his editorial a few of weeks ago, the editor basically pointed out what he viewed as the hypocrisy of the complaints by the grass-roots conservatives over the purging of grass-roots conservatives from important committee assignments by (House Speaker John) Boehner, while at the same time removing establishment Republicans from committee assignments at the state level.

Superintendents address Sandy Hook

We have all been shocked and hurt by the enormous tragedy that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary. Words are inadequate to describe the hurt that has occurred in Newtown, Conn. Our children’s safety and well-being is our No. 1 concern but we must also remember that no community is immune to such tragedies happening locally.

All of our districts have building and district Emergency Operations Plans in place in collaboration with local and county-wide first responders.

This past fall all the county school administrators and emergency personnel attended a training held by our sheriff’s department, led by Sheriff Robert Craft. We have agreements in place to share counselors and resources if ever one...
