Nothing aids a cause more than cooperation, teamwork and a shared vision. Hillsboro is not a perfect community, but the spirit of cooperation that it enjoys may be one of its greatest assets. It was evident again last week when leaders received word that the Kansas Department of Transportation has accepted the city’s application for two grants totaling almost $900,000 for two different projects. The grants had been approved in competition with numerous other communities, and one of the keys apparently is the strong working relationship between city government and the local school district. The two entities have worked hand in hand to bolster the chance of receiving funds targeted to improve the safety of highway drivers and school children.
Whether it’s safety projects, a new football stadium, a community foundation or an annual arts and crafts fair, people here find a way to work together to get the job done. President Harry Truman once said, “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” The philosophy has proven to be successful at the local level, too. —DR
