The Hillsboro Youth Adventure program approved in concept earlier this month by the Hillsboro City Council is an interesting idea: Invite middle-school youth to see the inner working of city government and the services it provides with the hope that someday it will lead them to raise their own families here. At first blush, it seems a bit of a stretch that seventh and eighth graders would find the endeavors of city staff to be potentially life changing, but who knows?

Of course, the program is much more than your run of the mill school field trip. Fun and food will be at the heart of the day-long program, and it will include a variety of hands-on activities and games. The basic concept, patterned after the Youth Academy in Great Bend seems to work—at least on the enjoyment side. Participants remain in touch with their experience for several years after completing it through an annual alumni party and personal contacts.

We think Hillsboro Youth Adventure is worth a try. Small towns have much to offer the next generation. It’s about time our youth realize that, too. —DR
