Coverup exposed

? A local business initiated a major aesthetic act this month that deserves public exposure.

It may be the biggest coverup in Marion County in decades, and we feel obligated to expose it to public scrutiny.

Earlier this month, perhaps in the dark of night (because the activity somehow escaped our notice), Coop?erative Grain & Supply painted its historic grain elevator in Hillsboro. It was a whitewash of amazing scale. The previously splotchy, Swiss-cheese-looking edifice now gleams in near perfect, almost ?snow-covered, whiteness.

What impresses us is that the project, so far as we know, was not required by any particular ordinance or lawful declaration. CG&S just laid out the bucks?more than six figures, we?ve heard?to make an aesthetic improvement that not only enhances their business but the entire community.

Years ago, the local paper ran a feature highlighting community-improvement initiatives with a ?Did Something Award.? Consider yourself awarded, CG&S.

And may your tribe increase. ?DR
