It’s good to see the level of interest people have in local government, based on the number of people who have filed for city and school offices for the April election. In a few cases, the situation appears dire with a lack of candidates on file. But at least in most instances, enough people are still willing to take on a thankless job in the name of public service so that each position can be filled.

The ideal would be to have at least two candidates for every position. The competition...

It takes more than athletic talent to win

I have had the privilege of observing two incredible high school girls’ basketball teams this season: Hillsboro girls and the girls from Wichita Heights, where I work as a library media specialist.

Both teams made it to state and won their state titles respectively. I think a lot of times people think it’s easy, and that sheer athletic talent will win the game. But I beg to differ.

I would like to propose some other factors that helped both of these teams win “the big one.”

1. Losing can be a good thing. Both of these teams lost in their regular season. They did not have perfect records. I believe that losing either makes you bitter or better. Both of these teams chose to make themselves better and went on a...

This past Saturday was different than my Saturdays have been for nearly 19 years. After my dad died in May 1990, it was my routine to go see how my mom was doing and if she needed anything. It wasn’t duty—I really enjoyed seeing her because she had so much to share and it was fun.

Now that she’s gone, I feel a big hole already. We knew her life was ebbing away over the past few months and, although she was 93, I’m still not ready.

Her life was a journey and we all went along—including my sisters, brother and a host of close relatives and friends. We all have a perspective, and I am giving mine here.

I remember my mother as being strict but lenient at the same time. Strict when it came to obeying the rules but lenient when...

In the 2009 Hillsboro Annual Report that we’ve inserted in this week’s Free Press, you will encounter the economic lifeblood of this town. In addition to the ads that trumpet the wide range of products and services our local businesses offer, we again are running profiles of every and any business that chose to participate—around 100.

We encourage you to browse through this compendium of commerce. More than a business guide, it’s a testimony to the entrepreneurial spirit that resides in this area. Having entered the “real world” of business when we launched this newspaper in 1998, we know the challenge of operating a small business. It isn’t easy. But it’s worth the investment of blood, sweat and tears. The can-do spirit...

As Trojan Booster Club president, I would like to thank everyone who attended the state basketball tournament at Hutchinson this past week. From the students to the adults, everyone was enthusiastic and supportive.

The gold T-shirt was the brainchild of Hillsboro High Activities Director Max Heinrichs. He called me Monday morning and asked if I thought we could raise enough money to buy 1,000 shirts. I said we could probably get enough for 500, so we ordered them. As it turned out we got enough money to order and deliver 850 shirts.

A huge thank-you to all of the people and businesses who sponsored the shirts. And a huge thank-you to Western Associates of Marion for getting a quality shirt done at a moment’s notice.

With 850 gold...
