Marion County is blessed with strong educational leadership, and the addition of Steve Noble as the new superintendent for USD 410 in Hillsboro will only fortify that position. It doesn’t take long to be impressed not only with his commitment to the education of our children, but with his ability to articulate and energize that vision through strong communication and collaboration skills.

Noble is quick to say that climbing the professional ladder is not his priority. He and wife Gita say...

n Deb Miller, state secretary of transportation, told Florence city leaders that constructing a roundabout would be the safest financially feasible solution for the intersection of U.S. highways 50 and 77. About 22 roundabouts have been constructed in the state to this point.

Partly Nonsense

My head is spinning from trying to keep up with what President Obama and his party are attempting to push through in Washington these days.

There is a daily dose of fixing this and fixing that, with mounds and mounds of more borrowed money and government intrusion.

To put the cost of health care reform into perspective I tried to take a trillion dollars and enter it into my calculator to find out how much that number is divided by 46 million—the estimated number of uninsured Americans—and I can’t put that many zeroes into it.

Pretty soon we’ll have to buy a new calculator that accounts for these huge numbers without fancy math.

Smart people can figure these numbers using the number 10 to the power of 10, 14 or whatever. I...

When I started working at the Hillsboro Free Press in October, I introduced myself and mentioned how much I like it here. Now, more than nine months later, I wanted to add to that by telling a little more of the story.

About three years ago, my husband, Randy, had an opportunity to work in Hillsboro. After discussing it, we both decided it was for the best.

At the time, we thought it was a temporary assignment and so I went about my newspapering job in Colby.

Each Friday, Randy would faithfully make the four-hour drive home and on Sunday’s he would pack his bag and head back for another work week in Hillsboro.

One month went by, then two months, six months, a year and every weekend without fail, whether snow, rain, heat or gloom...
