Congratulations to those who contributed to the planning and execution of this year’s Marion County Fair. A particular tip of the hat to those who scheduled the unusually pleasant weather. Your next assignment should be to recruit bands for the parade from all five high schools in the county instead of only one.

This year’s fair had many of the traditional features, but it offered enough new opportunities to give it a refreshing dimension. In particular, the participation of the Marion County Fire Chiefs Association through the “Fire Jam 2009” concert series and the fireworks extravaganza during the demolition derby was a positive addition—even though the concerts drew small crowds.

We salute your efforts...and await 2010. —DR

A kind life lived with care and purpose

 

I’ve spent the past week trying to come up with a list of people whose lives have been—or were—as kind, caring and purposeful as Marvin Groening’s.

Alas, it’s a short list.

The Week That Was

n Historic-high beef prices have prompted the Mennonite Central Committee mobile meat canner to process turkey during this year’s three-day stop at Hillsboro. Beef was going to cost the relief agency $1.74 a pound while turkey cost $1 a pound.

n Harvey County officials visited the Marion County Board of Commissioners this week were granted Marion County support in their struggle to have the Kansas Legisla­ture overturn tax exemption for independent-living units owned by non-profit entities such as nursing homes.

n The Tabor College football team, ranked 13th nationally, beat the University of Saint Mary, 21-12, to improve to 7-0.

n The Hillsboro High cross-country team qualified for the state meet by finishing second in regional...

Thinking of my 5x6 Plymouth

I know everyone remembers the first car they ever bought. If you paid for your own, like I did, the first one usually had a few problems that came with it—to make it affordable.

My first one was a 1956 Plymouth convertible that I bought in the summer of 1963 for $165.00. And boy did it ever have some problems.

First of all it didn’t have a top but it was a convertible and it was summer so what was the big deal. And it didn’t have a heater either but cold weather was months away. It also had a dinged up rear fender but that didn’t affect how it drove.
