A kind life lived with care and purpose

I’ve spent the past week trying to come up with a list of people whose lives have been—or were—as kind, caring and purposeful as Marvin Groening’s.

Alas, it’s a short list.

n An estimated 900 people converged on downtown Hillsboro Sept. 4 for a city-wide celebration of the completion of the four-month, $800,000 Main Street renovation project. The city provided free hot dogs and sodas and the Hillsboro Community Band and the Schniggle-Fritz Band performed. At about 8 p.m., City Administrator Steve Garrett flipped on the new street lights to a musical fanfare and the applause of onlookers.

n The Marion County Board of Commissioners addressed several unusual problems at its Monday meeting, including the discovery of medical waste dumped in a cistern on the courthouse grounds, cattle spooked by the Labor Day fireworks show at the county lake, and how fix the county lake’s dam to meet state...

Forty years ago this past Monday was an awe-inspiring event. I remember exactly where we were for the first manned lunar landing in history.

We lived in Cambridge, Md., in a small upstairs apartment on High Street. We were glued to the TV as Walter Cronkite described this marvelous accomplishment.

It’s ironic that his death occurred as we celebrate the anniversary. One of the many tributes to Cronkite reported two of three televisions were tuned to the moon landing—much easier to do before these days of cable TV and satellite programming.

The 79th annual Marion County Fair is set to offically begin today with the annual parade down Hillsboro’s Main Street at 6:30 p.m. This year’s gathering returns many of the traditional events and activities of fairs past, including the rodeo, demolition derby and 4-H competitions. But the buzz this year is for an ambitious first-year undertaking: Fire Jam ’09, a three-night concert series featuring artists Kebo Cyrus, T. Graham Brown and headliner Bucky Covington of “American Idol” fame.

We salute the Marion County Fire Chiefs Association and the fair board for working together to expand the attraction of the fair beyond our county borders while simultaneously supporting the work of our volunteer fire departments by...

Town and St. Nick have been amazing

Since recently moving to Hillsboro, we have enjoyed the spirit and kindness of this community.

Saturday we and our family attended the Old-Fashioned Christmas at the historic Schaeffler House. It was a lovely experience. St. Nicholas was amazing!

Thank you for welcoming us to your community.

A lot of people think economic development is all about bringing large manufacturers to our community. That would be great, but then we have to consider where the skilled or even unskilled work force will come from.

This problem is not unique to Marion County, but all across our state. We are doing a good job of sending our best and brightest to...
