Dahl joins House leaders in letter to AG about Tiller

Kansas House of Representatives Speaker Pro Tem Don Dahl (R-Hillsboro)released a letter Friday that was sent to Attorney General PaulMorrison earlier this week.

The letter asked the attorney general to act to ensure chargesfiled by previous Attorney General Phill Kline against physician GeorgeTiller are heard by a jury.

“Members of the Kansas Legislature have been inundated with telephonecalls, petitions, letters and e-mails from Kansans across the state,asking that we direct the attorney general to proceed with the criminalcase against Dr. Tiller,” Dahl said.

“I am very disappointed in the lack of action by the state’s chieflaw enforcement officer regarding the issues addressed in our letter.”

Work begins on Adams Street

A crew from APAC-Kansas attempts to remove a stubborn tree from along the 300 block of South Adams as part of the initial steps in the renovation that began Monday of the 300 and 400 blocks of the street. The affected area runs past the east edge of the Tabor College campus. The street was closed to through traffic from D Street north to C Street. The primary purpose of the project is to improve drainage in the area. The work is being done in conjunction with the construction of the new townhouse for Tabor students (in the background of the inset photo). The project is being funded with assistance from the Kansas Department of Transportation loan fund.
   

Most races uncontested in April 3 local election

Only 10 of the 42 races across Marion County have more candidates on the ballot than available openings as the April 3 local election approaches.

Among the 12 cities in the county, Marion has the only contested mayoral race. It features incumbent Martin Tice and challenger Mary Olson.

Hillsboro is one of five cities that has a contested race for a city council seat. Shane Marler will be challenging incumbent Matt Hiebert for a chance to represent East Ward residents.

In the West Ward, Robert Watson is running unopposed for the seat currently held by Leonard Coryea, who did not file. Delores Dalke is running unopposed for her 13th term as mayor.

Meanwhile, Florence has two contested council seats, Burns has five candidates for three...

Why are you running for mayor?

As the current mayor I feel Marion is moving in a positive direction. We have new businesses in the community, businesses that have expanded, construction of the joint project with the school district, the improvement at the water plant, streets that have been improved and a positive attitude in the community to name a few of the pluses.

At the same time we have to continue to work for growth and improvement. I feel I can help in this area and would like to see the progress continue and projects completed.
