Day trip planned for ‘War & Peace’ exhibit at Eisenhower Museum

The Tabor College alumni office is organizing a day trip Wednesday, Nov. 14, to visit the “War & Peace” exhibit currently on display at the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene.

The exhibit features the fiber artwork of Shin-hee Chin, Tabor’s associate professor of art and graphic design.

The outing will include chartered bus transportation, leaving from Wichita at 8:50 a.m., with additional stops in Newton and Hillsboro. It will include an early lunch at the Kirby House in Abilene and a tour of the exhibit with Chin providing commentary. The presentation will take place at noon at the museum.

Ghost tour planned Oct. 20 in Marion

The Marion Historical Museum is sponsoring a “Ghost Tour” Oct. 20.

Participants will leave the museum by “ghost trolley” at 7 p.m., 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.

Tickets are $2 and are available at the museum; children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Wiebe establishes fund to assist Adobe House

Local historian Raymond F. Wiebe has established a $50,000 endowment through the Hills­boro Community Foundation to ensure the future of the Adobe House Museum and preserve the history of Mennonite culture.

The arrangement was made official Friday.

Wiebe has named the endowment the “David V. Wiebe Memorial Fund for Hillsboro Pioneer Adobe House and Museum,” in honor of his father.

According to the memorandum of understanding, income from the endowment can be used for the creation, maintenance and interpretation of museum exhibits; wages and staffing; marketing and promotion; and other projects recommended by the Hillsboro Museum Advisory Board.

Stone memorializes loss of children

Jacob Goering of Kidron Bethel Retirement Community in North Newton, takes a moment to look at the names on the monument following the dedication ceremony Sunday at Catlin Cemetery. “My grandmother gave birth to one of the children who died,” he said. “She would have been my aunt had she lived.” For the descendants of Swiss immigrants, Sunday’s dedication service at Calin Cemetery was a “great day,” to honor the 17 children believed to have been buried there in September 1874.

More than 200 people attended the dedication ceremony with Brian Stuckey, chairman of the monument task force, introducing the speakers.

The stone measures 4 feet, 6 inches by 2 feet, 6 inches and cost $2,170, which was donated.

Jim Juhnke, a retired history professor at Bethel College, spoke about events leading to the death of so many children.

“When the immigrant ancestors reached Peabody in the fall of 1874, they lived in temporary housing near the Peabody railroad station,” he said.
