Young dancer auditions at Bethel event

Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts hosted a winter dance concert Dec. 21 and allowed students to audition dance pieces they independently choreographed and presented.

Amber Schmidt, 11, choreographed two dances for the audition and both were accepted for presentation in the show.

Hillsboro Frostbite run set for New Year’s Day

The Hillsboro Recreation Commission is sponsoring the eighth annual Frostbite Four Mile Fun Run at 2 p.m. New Year’s Day.

The noncompetitive event will start and end at Memorial Park and is open to runners and walkers. The entry fee is $15. Every preregistered participant will receive a commemorative gift. For more information call 620-877-7512.

City of Hillsboro’s stolen pickup finally identified

Hillsboro city leaders have solved the mystery of the city-owned pickup that was stolen seven months ago at the city electric shop on the north edge of town.

The thief or thieves apparently loaded $60,000 worth of copper wiring, tools and protective gear into the nearby pickup and drove off.

The theft occurred the first weekend of May. City Administrator Larry Paine said the break in the case came last week when a call came in to the city shop. A Coffeyville man asked if the city happened to be missing a pickup.

The man said he had driven his own car from Coffeyville to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, but the vehicle broke down while he was there.

Hillsboro council clarifies position on code manuals

The Hillsboro City Council approved at its Dec. 4 meeting the ordinance adopting the current edition of building codes for the city, and clarified its policy regarding contractors needing to own the appropriate code manuals.

The council unanimously approved Ordinance 1224 adopting the 2012 International Building Code—which, by reference, includes codes for residential buildings, energy conservation, property maintenance, mechanical, plumbing and fuel gas—and the 2011 National Electric Code.

The city previously had been operating on the 2006 Uniform Building Code. The change was made primarily because insurance companies would be charging rates in cities using an outdated edition of the codes.

Marion council extends deadline for landowners to remove structure

The Marion City Council at its Nov. 26 meeting agreed to give two new landowners 45 days to take down a structure at 700 N. Cedar St., but if it’s not completed by then, the city will move on the process.

City Administrator Doug Kjellin said that prior to the bid opening to destroy the structure, Pat Bernhardt, former property owner, said he sold the parcel and the owner was willing to tear down the building.

“When the notice was received, Mr. Bernhardt requested until Christmas to complete the demolition,” Kjellin said.

“I have spoken to Dalke Construction and they are aware of the possible delay (or cancellation) if the structure is removed by the landowners.”
