Chamber bazaar offers early taste of the holidays

Sisters Lydia (foreground) and Cora Kimble of Buhler were among the visitors Saturday for the third annual Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Craft Bazaar at First Mennonite Church. This year, 12 vendors sold items ranging from gift baskets, quilting, candles and baked goods to photographs, afghans, soaps, lotions and scroll work, according to Sheryl Lehr, event coordinator and member of the Chamber’s Promotion Committee. In addition to the vendors, FMC youth served five varieties of soup as a fundraising project. Lehr said she was glad to see the number of vendors was up this year, but was disappointed in attendance.
Hillsboro-wide Thanksgiving service will include music by Tabor College

The public is invited to attend the community-wide Thanksgiving service and fall festival concert, “With Praise and Thanksgiving,” beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.The event is co-sponsored by Tabor College and the Hillsboro Area Ministerial Association and will feature concert performances by a variety of groups and soloists from the Tabor Music Department.
Admission is free with a donation of a non-perishable food item for Main Street Ministries. An offering will be gathered for the work of the Ministerial Alliance.

Tabor College chemistry professor Bruce Heyen fills the weather balloon with helium, assisted by students in his astronomy class. Even the folks at NASA have launch issues sometimes. Before an eager audience of Tabor College and Hillsboro public school students, an attempt to launch a weather balloon Thursday morning took an unexpected turn when a string and clip snapped seconds before the planned release—sending the helium-filled balloon sailing higher and higher into the clear Kansas sky while leaving the attached testing equipment firmly grounded.
Hillsboro Elementary School students had varying reactions to the long wait.

Hillsboro council approves fee hike

After hearing the objections of about a half-dozen citizens at its previous meeting, the Hillsboro City Council did approve a recommendation at its Nov. 3 meeting to add $8.70 to residents’ monthly sewer fee.The intent of the action is to save the city about $2.75 million in interest by paying off its 40-year bond in about half the time.
The increase will take effect Jan. 1.
The council vote was 3-1, with councilors Bob Watson, Kevin Suderman and Shelby Dirks in favor and Byron McCarty opposing.
McCarty said after the meeting that he was opposed to the timing of the fee, not the fee itself.
