For the first time in the nine-year history of the girls’ Trojan Classic tournament, the home team claimed the championship. Above, Robert Rempel, Hillsboro High School activities director and tournament coordinator, presents the first-place plaque to the four Trojan seniors: (from left) Tena Loewen, Christina Morris, Maci Schlehuber and Erin Winter. After a first-round win over Thomas More Prep, Hillsboro posted wins against Hesston and Wamego.

Both Class 4A schools were unbeaten, and Wamego was ranked No. 1 in the state. In all, a record five schools, including Hillsboro, were undefeated when the seedings were made, making this year’s tournament one of the toughest in the state. In the photo below, even the adult Trojan fans were enthused. In the boys’ tournament, Hillsboro went 2-1 for fifth place while Holcomb claimed the tournament title.
