A great day for the Great Pumpkin Race

GPRaceKidStart539 About 105 runners turned out Saturday morning for the fourth annual Great Pumpkin Race sponsored by First Mennonite Church in downtown Hillsboro. The event included a 5-kilometer route through the streets of town followed by a half-mile for kids. In the top photo, the kids take off on a dead run for their out-and-back race along East Grand Avenue. Eight-year-old Grayson Ratzlaff posted the winning time among the boys at 2 minutes, 41 seconds. Tiffany Schale, 10, was the first girl to finish. She posted a time of 2:51.

In the 5K, Kyle Shults of Wichita was the overall winner in a time of 18:56 and Donna Spoonmore was the top female in 22:06. All participants were encouraged to dress up in costumes for Halloween. In the bottom photo, Paul Raugust of Hillsboro crosses the inflatable finish-line arch dressed up as a roll of toilet paper. For complete results of the race, see Page 6B.
