Memorial Day was both a time to honor those who sacrificed their lives for their country as well as a celebration of the unofficial arrival of summer fun. In the top photo, Mel Ratzlaff, serving as the sergeant of arms for Hillsboro American Legion Post 366, lays a wreath at the monument to local veterans who have died.
The ceremony took place at the annual Memorial Day services hosted by Post 366 in Memorial Park. Don Dahl, former state representative and retired Navy veteran, was the featured speaker. Later that morning, near the boat dock at Hillsboro Cove, Nathan Fideldy, 9, of Hutchinson holds up a 5-pound walleye he caught at Marion Reservoir. Nathan was enjoying the day at the lake with father Brad, mother Rachelle and 5-year-old sister Marissa. The Fideldy family also caught several catfish and white bass while drifting in the middle of the lake; they used nightcrawlers as bait.
