Commissioners irked by county tax break for new Hillsboro hospital

The financial burden of the county’s revitalization plan for tax abatement hit home with the Marion County Commis­sion Monday with the realization that a large improvement proposed for Hillsboro most likely will come under the county’s plan rather than Hillsboro’s.

The heads-up for the tax money twist was given by Appraiser Cindy Magill, who told commissioners she had been contacted by a person representing Hillsboro’s new hospital regarding filing for tax relief under the revitalization plan.

Magill said Hillsboro’s latest city revitalization plan adopted in 2008 probably doesn’t include the hospital’s location, which is outside the city limits.

Mail it back: Mayor says census cooperation benefits everyone

The mayor of Marion County’s largest town is urging households throughout the county to fill out and return their 2010 U.S. Census forms by the end of the month.

Delores Dalke, active in Hillsboro city government for more than 25 years, said mailing back the questionnaire in a timely manner will make a difference for every resident in the county, not just in Hillsboro.

“It helps the city of Hillsboro and also Marion County when it comes to getting grants and loans from either state or federal sources,” she said. “They always do them based on your population.

“The reason for filling out your census is that we get everybody counted.”

Leadership Marion County class meets in Peabody

Members of the 2010 Leadership Marion County class met Thursday at The Hub in Peabody. This year’s class members include (from left) David Scott, administrator, Legacy Park in Peabody; Tish Keesling, city clerk, Lost Springs; Angie Schwerdtfeger, Tri-County Telephone, and Connie Omstead, retired from Marion County Special Education Cooperative. The leadership program offers participants a chance to see how local, county and state governments work, along with exposure to the communities arpund the county. Prior to attending class in Peabody, the group was in Florence at Morning Star Ranch and Tampa’s Community Center. The next class is April 1 in Hillsboro with members taking a tour of western Marion County businesses.

Marion hoops mania starts at state

The Marion community sent off its high school Warrior girls’ basketball team to the Class 3A state championship game Saturday in Hutchinson with a motorcade escort down Main Street. It was the first time an MHS girls’ team was playing for a state basketball title, and its first trip to state since 1992.

 

Local fans, including USD 408 Superintendent Lee Leiker, wife Diane and son Landon, lined Main Street to express their support.
