Schmidt signs for Tabor football

Goessel High School senior Trey Schmidt signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play football next year at Tabor College. The quarterback/defensive back was a first-team all-league selection in 2011 and 2012. In his senior season, Schmidt recorded 1,757 passing yards (38 touchdowns) and 722 rushing yards (13 touchdowns). He had 132 tackles last season. In four years at Goessel, Schmidt racked up 2,729 yards passing (52 touchdowns), 916 yards rushing (18 touchdowns) and 249 total...

MHS softball drops two to Clay Center

The Marion softball team took part in only one of two scheduled doubleheaders last week as the Canton-Galva games slated for Tuesday were postponed because of weather.

The Warriors did see action Friday, traveling to Clay Center for two non-league games. The Warriors dropped both games 11-0 and 10-0 to hold a 2-0 league record, 2-4 overall.

TCBsbFriendsTorres2Bbot6 Troy Torres hits a double in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to Tabor’s 5-3 victory over Friends in Game 2 Saturday. The Tabor baseball team was 4-2 last week to hold an 18-2 KCAC record, 28-10 overall.

“We played well for the most part,” coach Mark Standiford said. “Alex Mann had a very good week, collecting two saves and one win.”

Friends—Tabor won three of four games in its series with the Falcons (8-12, 16-22), starting with a doubleheader split Friday.

TCtennisBethelJakeBrucks Jake Brucks sends the ball over the net in the No. 3 doubles match he and his brother, Sam Brucks, played against Bethel Thursday. The brothers dropped the match, 8-5, but later went on to gain Tabor’s only win of the day by defeating their opponents in No. 5 and No. 6 singles. The Tabor tennis teams faced three conference opponents last week, with the men winning two of three and the women dropping all three contests.

Southwestern—The Bluejays traveled to Southwestern Saturday. The men won 8-1 over the 0-3, 1-13 Moundbuilders, and the women fell, 5-4, to a Southwestern team holding a 2-1 KCAC record, 6-7 overall.

TCsbYorkBowen Ashton Bowen throws to first during Tabor’s doubleheader at York College (Neb.) Monday. The Bluejays split the games, dropping Game 1, 4-2, and winning, 12-11, in Game 2. The Tabor softball team picked up four conference wins last week with wins over Bethel and McPherson and split two games at York Monday to improve to 6-6 in the KCAC, 12-22 overall.

“We keep on battling and are making the sure outs to keep us in the game and give us a chance to win,” coach Suzanne Unruh said. “We have had timely hitting to score runs when we have opportunities to score.”
