Another big wish comes true

Thane Hurst and his father, Tim, pause for a photo along the Appalachian Trail. The Hursts were able to experience the family adventure late last month thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Make-A-Wish Foundation, the organization known for making dreams come true for young people with life-threatening medical conditions, recently fulfilled a wish for one Hillsboro youth.

Thane Hurst, 18, who missed out on the majority of his high school experience in Peabody, said he always wished he could go hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

“I wanted to start backpacking and thought it would be interesting and good exercise to do the Appalachian Trail,” he said.

Street project under way in Hillsboro

Workers with Barkley Construction, Wichita, began removing the asphalt surface of Date Street on the west side of Hillsboro Monday morning. The peak of the street will be lowered as part of a larger improvement project that involves Date, Cedar and Birch streets. Barkley submitted the low bid of $391,000; most of the cost will covered by a Com­munity Development Block Grant.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Planners prepare for Mennonite relief sale

The Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale for the 45th time is inviting the public to have fun while changing the world April 12 and 13 at the Kansas State Fair­grounds in Hutchinson.

The annual sale, sponsored by Kansas Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish congregations, raises funds for Menno­nite Central Committee—a world relief organization.

Easter bunny participates in egg hunt

A couple hundred children participated in the Hillsboro Kiwanis Club Easter egg hunt Saturday in Hillsboro’s Memorial Park. According to Clint Seibel, Kiwanis member, about 200 baskets were handed out, leaving 50 to distribute later to charitable organizations in town. The Easter bunny could also be found hopping among the children or wandering around getting his picture taken with families.

 

 

Singer Nichols joinsChingawassa lineup

Joe Nichols will be performing at Chingawassa Days June 7. The lineup of headliner acts for this year’s Chingawassa Days was completed recently with the announcement that country singer Joe Nichols would be performing Friday, June 7.

Mike Powers, committee chair, said committee members are excited about the news.

“We are feeling like we may have scored on this one,” he said. “(Joe Nichols) is a very current act and has a new album coming out.”
