Hillsboro receives its first snowfall of the season

 It fell silently, gently and didn’t hang around very long, but downtown Hillsboro and much of Central Kansas received its first snowfall of the winter season on Friday night. About 2 to 3 inches of the wet white stuff blanketed the ground by Saturday morning. Sunshine and above-freezing temperatures took care of most of the accumulation during the day.

Kansas Speaker of the House Melvin Neufeld addressed severall hot-button issues during a presentation at Monday’s 60+ Learning in Retirement at Tabor College.

Neufeld, who first ran for the Kansas Legislature in 1984, will lead the 2008 session when it begins Jan. 14.

County to push ahead with jail project for Nov. 2008 ballot

The Marion County Commis­sion meeting Nov. 13, pushed ahead with plans that may put a new $7.5 million 75- to 78-bed jail in Marion’s Batt Industrial Park.

The commission plans to place the initiative on the November 2008 general election ballot for a decision by voters.

Commissioners said the project likely would be funded by a combination of sales-tax revenue and a property-tax bond issue.
