Relay raises nearly $30,000 in the fight against cancer

RelayForLifeBanner392 Cancer survivors carry a banner on behalf of others during the survivors’ lap where cancer survivors and their caregivers took a victory lap around the track at the Marion Sports Aquatic Center. Almost $30,000 was raised at the 18th annual Marion County Relay for Life event Saturday with proceeds going to benefit the American Cancer Society.

This year’s event was held inside the Marion Sports Aquatic Center with walkers circling the foyer area.

It was the first year the event was at the facility. With persistent rain showers throughout the evening, many walkers said it was a good alternative.

DroughtCityPond20121 What a difference rain made this weekend in the scenery and psyche of the area. The top photo of the city pond at Memorial Park in Hillsboro appeared on the front page of our Aug. 15 issue; the one bellow it was taken Saturday afternoon.The Corps of Engineers office at Marion Reservoir recorded 2.11 inches of rain from Thursday through Saturday, with a peak of 1.30 inches on Friday. RichardKyleBook122 Richard Kyle holds his latest book, “Apocalyptic Fever,” which explores America’s interest in the end of the world. Why do Americans love doomsday?

That’s the question Richard Kyle, Tabor College professor of history and religion, addresses in his latest book, “Apocalyptic Fever: End-time Prophecies in Modern America.”

The book, Kyle’s 10th, was released earlier this month by Cascade Books, an imprint of Wipf and Stock Publishers, which combines academic rigor with broad appeal and readability.

MarshmallowRecordRoastingcmyk In the heat of competition: Roast participants cooked their marshmallows during the March 24 event. Marion County residents can hold their heads high with the official word last week that they helped set a new record with Guinness World Records for “Most People Roasting Marshmallows.”

Steve Hudson, superintendent of Marion County Park and Lake, said his office received confirmation that the attempt he helped organize March 24 at the lake was successful.
