Hali Krause and Hannah Bartel, fifth-graders at Hillsboro Elementary School, took advantage of some water-line maintenance by the city of Hillsboro to enjoy a cool shower on an otherwise warm Friday afternoon. The two girls made their splash at the corner of Kennedy and C streets. A few adult residents took advantage of the opportunity to get a free car wash. The warm temperatures seemed more like mid-summer than the waning days of the season...

The rain more or less ended in the afternoon, but by then many guests, and some exhibitors and vendors had checked out.

Despite a dreary, cold and rainy day, shoppers who attended the Hillsboro Arts & Crafts Fair and Marion’s Art in the Park came to buy, according to event organizers.

Public can speak to zoning regs on alcohol

Hillsboro citizens will have a chance to offer their input in the way zoning guidelines should regulate businesses that want to offer liquor by the drink.

The Hillsboro Planning Commission has called for a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thurs­day, Sept. 27, in city hall as part of the process of formulating a zoning recommendation to the city council for its approval.

By virtue of state and county statutes, a city cannot disallow liquor by the drink within boundaries. However, it can regulate...

New Community Chorale harmonizing for the joy of it

Twenty people from across Marion County, ranging in age from 16 to 70, turned out to sing. Director Bradley Vogel says the group would welcome many more voices.

A new sound is resonating from the Tabor College Music Department this year as a new mixed chorus called the Tabor College Community Chorale, takes the stage.

Glory Train

glorytrainhdr.jpg glorytrainhdr.jpg A steam train carrying about three dozen Fort Riley soldiers and their families rolled through Marion and Peabody Friday morning—giving local crowds an opportunity to thank the soldiers for their service in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.

The soldiers rode the train from Herington to Wichita. Union Pacifichad offered similar treks to soldiers in other parts of the country.This was the first one in the Midwest.
